Automatic wallets

For some of our supported wallet types, the third party API cannot return transactions (such as Kiwi-Coin and NiceHash).

In this case, we will regularly update the account on demand, and fetch new balances (rather than transactions). These balances will then be saved as histories for the account, and these histories will be used to render your portfolio charts.

This does not apply to accounts that are not configured to automatically update.

Fixed amounts

If an account is a fixed amount, and has no transactions, then we will assume that the balances for that account will apply on all dates in a chart period.

Tax reports

CryptFolio cannot use histories to generate tax reports; tax reports can only be created for wallets that return transactions.

The wallet service should also have an API to list the historical transactions made by a given user.

When CryptFolio updates one of your accounts or addresses automatically, through an API key or public address, we update existing transactions, and leave other transactions alone.

If two transactions have the same reference, value, currency, and date, then we consider them to be the same - and we will update the transaction with any additional information available (e.g. fee).

Since different public explorers for addresses often have different times for a transaction (often differing by only a couple of seconds, based on when the explorer received and processed the transaction), we consider two address transaction dates to be the same if they are within 5 minutes of each other. Otherwise, the dates need to be within 1 second of each other.

This means that if a provider suddenly changes the reference, value, or date for a currency, you may see duplicate transactions in your account.

If you are importing transactions manually, you can configure how you'd like CryptFolio to treat missing transactions: by either leaving them (the default), or by deleting them.

This loading spinner is displayed while the chart is calculating some data, or updating some accounts, asynchronously on one of our job servers. Any old data is displayed while we're crunching the new data, and your chart will refresh with the new data once the task has completed.

How long will the calculation take?

Generally, new job requests are completed within a few seconds, so you should only see this indicator very rarely. If you click or put your mouse over the loading spinner, you will see a message displaying how much longer you can expect the task to take to complete, based on our current load and the size of our job queue.

Free users are placed at the bottom of the priority for our job queue, so if you see this message frequently, you may want to consider upgrading your account.

Why does CryptFolio execute tasks asynchronously?

Each of the different services that we integrate with have different rate limit requirements on how often we can request data. CryptFolio does not download balances and process reports with your device, or on demand, so that we can satisfy these requirements.

Rather, new tasks are submitted to our job servers. These job servers process these requests asynchronously in a safe and balanced way, and once each task has been processed, the results are delivered to you.

When importing transactions for one of your accounts – either through an API integration, or by uploading a CSV of transactions – CryptFolio attempts to automatically assign each transaction a transaction type if it's safe to do so, to reduce the amount of work you need to do to later assign them transaction types.

(Transaction types are necessary to accurately calculate your reports, e.g. inventory, realised and unrealised gains, and FIFO tax reports.)

Automatic wallet imports (API) and manual imports (CSV)

When importing transactions from a third-party service (such as your exchange wallet), or uploading transactions by manual CSV import, we follow the following algorithm to determine a transaction type:

If the transaction is a sale or a purchase, we will create the transaction as a Sale or Purchase transaction.

If the transaction is a trade, we will create two transactions: one Sale transaction, and one Purchase transaction.

If the transaction is a deposit or a withdrawal, we will create the transaction as a Transfer transaction.

If the transaction is an airdrop, we will create the transaction as an Airdrop transaction.

Otherwise, if your portfolio is configured to automatically assign transaction types, if the transaction is positive (delta > 0), we will create the transaction as a Purchase transaction; if the transaction is negative (delta < 0), we will create the transaction as a Sale transaction.

Automatic address imports

When importing a transaction for an address through one of our supported explorers, we use the following algorithm to determine a transaction type:

If we can identify two transactions within the same portfolio, using the same currency, with the same transaction reference/ID, the same delta (after fees), and within 24 hours of each other, we will assign both transactions as Transfer transactions.

Otherwise, if your portfolio is configured to automatically assign transaction types, if the transaction is positive (delta > 0), we will create the transaction as a Purchase transaction; if the transaction is negative (delta < 0), we will create the transaction as a Sale transaction.

This is because one of the strengths of cryptocurrency is the safety and security that anonymity provides; and it should not be necessary to request Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in order to view a portfolio.

If you are wanting to use CryptFolio anonymously, we recommend that you consider the steps in this guide.

NOTE: The extent of your anonymity will depend on how much effort and the resources you are willing to place into staying anonymous. All of our users must adhere to our Terms of Use at all times.

Use Tor or proxies

Note however that we may restrict Tor users from accessing the site from time to time due to network abuse.

Use an anonymous email address

You might not want to use the same email address across multiple accounts, or services – for example, you should not use the same email address for an exchange account as you use with CryptFolio.

Check out the WikiHow guide to sending anonymous email.

If you are experienced with anonymous server administration, you might want to consider setting up your own private email server.

Do not submit Personally Identifying Information

When signing up for an account, the only information that we require is your country (for tax purposes) and your IP address. For a full list of information that we collect, check out our privacy policy.

You do not need to provide your name or any other revealing information on CryptFolio. We only require an email address if you want to use features such as paid accounts, and/or automated notifications.

Our payment providers support many different types of cryptocurrencies with varying levels of pseudo-anonymity.

Regularly review your personal data

(Coming soon) We provide a tool to download a copy of all of the information associated with your CryptFolio account. You can regularly download this information and review it to check for any Personally Identifable Information.

Upload fake or incomplete data

We do not do any sort of verification on your portfolio, and you are welcome to insert in as much or as little information, real and/or fake, as you would like. Note that this can impact other reports that use your information, e.g. tax reporting or profit/loss charts.

You are also welcome to share your information across multiple, independent CryptFolio accounts – for example, by having separate CryptFolio accounts for Bitcoin and Litecoin, and then accessing each of these accounts from a different device, machine or IP address.

Run your own instance

There must be at least one Explorer for that currency, with a public API to retrieve the balance of an address.

Ideally, the Explorer will also have a public API to list all transactions associated with an address.

For example, a port of Abe is often sufficient.
